Élisa and Felice Baciocchi in the busts by Lorenzo Bartolini

Lorenzo Bartolini, Busto di Felice Baciocchi. Carrara, Accademia di Belle Arti

Lorenzo Bartolini was named professor at the Academy of Carrara on 30 October 1807: in this role he became not only the artist of a great number of portraits of the imperial family but also, as evidenced in documents kept in the Academy archive, the organizer of the immense imperial sculptural production that was pivoting on Carrara, run like a commercial enterprise.
Bartolini made a bust of Élisa, who was primarily responsible for the rebirth of the Academy, that would become her official likeness, an exemplar of which is kept at the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio. Here Élisa is portrayed with her hair gathered up and held by a band decorated with stars, from which soft curls escape, framing her face.
Bartolini also made a bust of Felice Baciocchi, the cast of which is in the plaster cast gallery of the Academy of Carrara. The plaster model of the bust of Felice Baciocchi, the marble translation of which was presumably done during Bartolini’s stay in Carrara, is now kept in the Rivoltella City Museum in Trieste and was used in the sculpture ateliers engaged in those years in the production of marble portraits of the imperial family. After 1815 the sculptor was practically banned and many of his works destroyed. The plaster cast of Felice is one of the few models by Bartolini to survive the anti–Napoleonic revolt that took place in Carrara in spring 1814.
