Joseph Chinard, Busto di Eugenio Beauharnais. Carrara, Accademia di Belle Arti
Joseph Chinard, Busto di Eugenio Beauharnais. Carrara, Accademia di Belle Arti

The model for the portrait of Eugène de Beauharnais, son of Napoleon’s first wife, Joséphine and nominated by Bonaparte Vicerè of Italy in 1805, was made by Chinard between 1806 and 1808, together with the bust of Amalia Augusta of Baveria, Eugène’s wife. The translation into marble of the two works was displayed at the Parisian Salons during those years.

Joseph Chinard was one of the most important French sculptors established in Carrara at the beginning of the nineteenth century, also running a flourishing marble trade and specialized in the production of the furnishings that enjoyed great success in the French market at the time. The sculptor also made busts of Élisa, Felice and Élisa Napoléona. As documented on the inscription at the base of the work, it was donated by Chinard to the “Eugeninana” Academy in Carrara.
