The garden of the Villa Baciocchi in Capannoli (Pisa)

Capannoli (Pisa), Villa Baciocchi
Capannoli (Pisa), Villa Baciocchi

The villa, erected on the old ruins of the castle of Capannoli and belonging to the Pucci family starting in the seventeenth century, was acquired by the Marchesi Baciocchi in 1833 and, as recalled in an inscription on the architrave of the entrance door, successively restored (1837). Élisa Bonaparte’s court was never established in the Capannoli Villa however, which was purchased by the Baciocchi after her death (1820) and so at the end of French domination in Tuscany. The wall paintings visible in a few of the rooms seem to be traceable to the Baciocchi family, whose coat of arms appears on the architrave of the façade.
Among the most important interventions made there was the arrangement of the vast grounds by architect Luigi Bellincioni, who, in the second half of the nineteenth century had been entrusted, first by the Baciocchi and later by the Borghini, with the reorganization of the roads, the accesses, the fencing and the furnishings. The garden, clearly in line with the canons of Romantic taste current at the time, is still today characterized by thick forest vegetation and dotted with small aedicule and a rustic grotto. Here, more than 160 plant species of various provenances find their home, including twelve monumental trees.
The villa is now municipal property and houses the Zoological Museum and a Centre for Archaeological Documentation.
