The posthumous portraits of Carlo Maria Buonaparte

Three portraits of Napoleon’s father, Carlo Maria Buonaparte, are found in Ajaccio, one for each of the main exhibition sites: the Musée Fesch, the Hôtel de Ville and the Maison Bonaparte. All three are posthumous works, commissioned by his children in memory of a father who, having died in 1785, had not been able to witness the extraordinary rise of his own descendants.
In the first, conserved in the Hôtel de Ville, Carlo Maria is portrayed standing in the centre of the painting, turned slightly to the left. The painting is one of two copies (the other is kept in Versailles) of a painting, now lost, commissioned in 1804 by Lucien Bonaparte from Anne–Louis Girodet de Roussy–Trioson, a French Neoclassical painter and student of David: the artist was inspired by a miniature, at the same time following the indications of Madame Mère.
Lucien, Napoleon’s older brother, also commissioned a bust of his father, kept at the Musée Fesch: in this work, made by Joseph–Charles Marin between 1805 and 1807, Carlo Maria is represented ’all’antica’, with a nude torso.
A third portrait, the oldest since probably datable to the end of the eighteenth century, and housed at the Maison Bonaparte, portrays Carlo Maria Buonaparte in a half–length format, his hair and clothing in the style of a gentleman of the Ancien Régime.
